Family tree charts laid out properly

The heart of PrintFamilyTree is a layout engine written for genealogical data rather than for generic diagrams. It orders every generation from left to right so that lines do not have to cross, then computes exact positions with a constraint solver that keeps boxes apart and lines straight.

  • No overlapping boxes, ever. Minimum gaps are hard constraints, not suggestions.
  • Couples stay together. The man on the left, the woman on the right, one short marriage line between them.
  • Children under their parents, in birth order when every child has a date, otherwise in the order of your file.
  • Straight lines to only children, centred parents over several children whenever there is room, and a compact picture when there is not.
  • Crossings avoided by rearranging the siblings of ancestors; where the data leaves no choice, the line hops over the other with a small arc.
  • Every person once. A second marriage puts the person between two spouses; cousin marriages, adoptions and shared ancestors are shown with dashed reference boxes instead of duplicates.

Hourglass

Ancestors above and descendants below one person. Choose the number of generations in each direction.

Pedigree

Direct ancestors only, the classic doubling chart, father's line left and mother's line right.

Descendants

Everyone descending from a couple, with spouses, for reunions and surname studies.

All relatives

Ancestors, their siblings, cousins of every degree and all descendants on one poster, with a limit on how deep collateral lines go.

Books

A family history book, generated then written

The book generator produces the skeleton of a genealogical book directly from your file: the parts that are tedious and error-prone by hand, leaving you the stories.

  • Structure: one chapter per generation for descendant books, or per line for ancestor books, with an introduction and a table of contents.
  • Family entries: the couple, their events with dates and places written as sentences, the children with their dates, cross-references to their own entries.
  • Numbering in the Ahnentafel, Register (NGSQ) or d'Aboville system, printed on the charts and in the index.
  • Charts at the head of every chapter, sized to the page.
  • Sources as footnotes, taken from the citations in your file; notes become narrative paragraphs you can edit.
  • Index of names with married women under both surnames, and an index of places.
  • Export as a print-ready PDF in A4, US Letter, A5 or 6×9 inches, and as an editable document for your word processor.

What you still write yourself

The generator gives you every fact in its place. You add what the records do not contain: the reason the family moved, what the village looked like, the story your aunt told. Our guide on writing a family history book shows how the two fit together.

Living people

Per chart and per book you choose whether living relatives appear with full dates, with the year of birth only, with the name only, or not at all. One file, a private wall chart and a public poster.

Output built for paper

Files that a print shop accepts without questions.

PDF

Vector PDF in A4, A3, A2, A1, A0, US Letter, Tabloid and roll-paper sizes; multi-page tiling for home printers.

SVG

Scalable vector graphics for posters of any size and for editing in Inkscape, Illustrator or Affinity Designer.

PNG

High-resolution raster images at two or three times screen resolution for e-mail, messaging apps and websites.

Labels and styles
